Here are some of the services we

provide at Working Windows

Sealed units

Shattered, cracked, misted or water inside the glass units. Georgian, leaded, patterned or clear. Need a toughened glass unit for safety, laminated glass unit for security. All these are available and can be supplied and installed.

There is no need to replace the whole window due to a broken or broken down sealed glass unit.

If you have an energy efficient sealed glass unit that needs replacing, we use soft coat glass units.

Window and door locks

Is your window, door, patio door or bifold door hard to lock or not locking at all?

This could either be that the opening sash needs adjusting or the hinges need a slight adjustment which is sometimes the case, if not parts/locks may need to be replaced.

Some parts are discontinued due to their age, sometimes alternative parts are available. If not a new part can be installed.

Ironmongery

Broken handles, hinges, door knockers and other ironmongery can all be supplied and installed.

You may want a spyhole or night chain fitted for your security. Or an egress hinge (fire escape hinge) or restricted window hinge fitted for safety, all these options and more are available.

Bifold door or patio door not running smoothly, let us have a look.

A few more services that we can provide.

We do more than just repairs

  • A trickle vent, is a vent that can sit in the top of the outer frame or in the top of the sash/opener in either the door or window. What it does is it allows a trickle of air into the room while the window or door is shut. Having windows on ajar while you are out is a no-no with insurance companies. Trickle vents are a good idea for bathrooms, bedrooms and kitchens.

A slot would be cut into the frame and covered by the vent. Open/close inside - fixed open outside.

As of June 15th 2022 trickle vents have to be fitted to all new window and door installations, whether new build, extension or replacing old with new, and there has to be a minimum flow of air.

Various colours and sizes are available to suit your windows or doors.

  • Window hinges

If you have a gap down the hinge side of the window sash/opener. It usually means a new pair of hinges are required. Normal friction hinges, egress hinges (fire escape) and restrictor hinges are available. Side hung or top hung.

The hinge doesn’t need to be broken to have one changed. You may want to put a fire escape hinge on a window in a bedroom, or a restrictor hinge to stop a sash/opener from opening too far, approx 100mm/4in. This could be for security or for the safety of a vulnerable person.

    Door hinges

If a door sash catching as you close it or the lock is not engaging properly, it could either need a hinge adjustment to move the door into its correct position (could also need the glass repacking) or new set of door hinges if they are too worn. Different colours and types available.

Some hinges are obsolete due to the age, but replacements are available.

  • A spyhole can be fitted to most doors, front, side or rear for your piece of mind before you unlock your home to a visitor.

Night chains can also be fitted to any door.

Both items are available in a few colours and designs.

  • On the older style UPVC and on aluminium windows and doors, the rubber seal around the glazing is known to shrink back or perish, these can be supplied and replaced.

Also, the rubber seals around the opening sashes of windows and doors, these can sometimes perish or get torn, these can also be supplied and replaced.

  • We can supply the correct lubricants you need to keep the moving parts on your windows and doors running smoothly. Different lubricants can be used for different parts of the window and door locks.

Window and door locks should be sprayed regularly, also the door barrel, where the key goes should also be sprayed on a regular basis.

Doing this as it should, would hopefully save you from calling someone like me out to carry out a repair.

  • A cat or dog flap can be fitted to most doors and windows.

Normally cutting it into an existing UPVC or aluminium door or window panel, or we can supply a new panel in various colours.

Cat flaps can also be fitted into a sealed glass unit, with the glass unit having to be ordered in advance.

Cat and dog flaps can be supplied or we can install one that you have bought yourself. Different shapes and sizes to suit your cat or dog. If you only want your cat entering the house, some cat flaps open only when the microchip in your cat triggers the lock.

  • Has your old UPVC door panel cracked or yellowed, we can supply and install a new one to either match the one you have or, you can change the style and look completely.

We can even change the handle colour to match the furniture you have chosen for your new panel.

If you have a cat flap and no longer require one, we can replace the panel with either a new UPVC panel or a patterned or clear sealed unit. The later option would let more light into the area at the bottom of the door.

  • Your windows may have a draught coming in around the side of the window.

This could be either the internal sealant has shrunk away and the draught is coming from the cavity or the outside sealant has come away from where the brickwork and window meet.

Depending on how your original windows have been finished inside or outside, we can cure the unwelcome breeze coming into your house.

The photos below this section show examples of what trimming around a window would look like.

  • Door or window restrictors .

When a restrictor is installed on a door they stop the door from being pushed open past a certain point.

When installed on a window sash/opener, it prevents the window sash/opener from being pushed or pulled open past a certain point.

The window restrictor allows the sash/opener to open to approx 100mm/4in, but it can easily be disabled to allow the sash/opener to be opened fully.

A restrictor is also available as a restrictor hinge, a standard restrictor hinge or as an egress (fire escape) restrictor hinge.

Any of the above can be fitted to new and old UPVC windows and doors, some aluminium windows and doors do not accept them.

With the door restrictor, if the door is to be left open a hook and eye is a good idea, as the restrictor will not stop a strong gust of wind blowing it open or shut.
